Power Supply/Controller

We managed to package the power supply/controller and all related drive details into a relatively narrow (7-3/4") actuator housing...no need for an additional, bulky enclosure with all the related cables, etc...

Our controls engineers worked hard to develop an extremely intuitive operator interface for the Vortex. A sampling of the operator interface screens are shown below.

''
''
From this 'manual' control screen, the user can jog the spindle up and down - with z-axis readout, operate vacuum controlled tooling, and rotate the spindle with rotational, degree-position readout. Fantastic set-up features for the user!

This particular operator interface page shows the I/O status of the Vortex welder, a great tool for determining machine and peripheral device status, and in performing diagnostics.

Vortex, PRECEDENCE Spin Welder

The Vortex, PRECEDENCE, servo-driven spin welder represents the best value in the business - period. Extol has equipped this bench-top welder with a standard equipment list as it should be – complete and capable! Look at this partial list of features:

  • Four unique weld modes
    • Weld-by-depth, collapse travel
    • Weld-by-depth, total travel
    • Revolutions mode
    • Time mode
  • 7” (178mm) Color, touch-screen operator interface
  • Powerful 3.0kW motor producing 9.8 Nm of torque
  • Programmable force range from 10 - 450lbs
  • Programmable velocity rate with 'transition point' capability
  • High/low alarm control limits
  • On-board data logging
  • Leveling fixture plate
  • (16) set-up/recipe memory capability
  • Ergo mounted, opto-touch style start buttons
  • Vortex spindles are machined to accept pneumatic assisted tooling - positive or vacuum
  • Easy automation integration
  • Reset-able and lifetime cycle counters

PRECEDENCE

The Vortex welder can be further equipped with Stage II Ethernet data collection, gear-reduction options, an adjustable height work-station, and even with a powered rotary-indexer system.
Unique customer specials are never a problem at Extol, we excel in them!

Right out of the box we started with a rugged alloy square column and heavy-duty cast base to prevent deflection and provide an easy means of vertical head adjustment.
''
The 15" diameter, ground steel leveling plate is standard on all Vortex welders, the bolt hole pattern provides great flexibility for various tooling scenarios. 'Opto-touch' start switches are mounted in an ideal ergonomic position and the e-stop button and robust power switch are laid out in a clean and functional format.
''
We considered numerous tooling configurations when we laid out the Vortex spin welder. Every unit is machined with a spindle that will accept vacuum for part retention in the upper tooling - or positive air pressure for inflatable 'bladder' tooling - standard. The picture below shows prototype tooling for welding a fairly complex oil fill neck where we took advantage of some creative design and utilized vacuum in both the upper and lower tools.

This picture shows the unwelded glass-filled Nylon components and the assembly in the lower fixture after welding...the final orientation requirement was very tight - no problem for a servo-controlled welder. But it's not just about final position, servo-control along with our standard weld-by-depth capability equates to very tight process control. The repeatability of servo-control over pneumatically driven spin welders is significant.
