Custom Product Manufacturing Specialist

Job Summary

The Custom Product Manufacturing Specialist is responsible for cultivating a culture of learning, adapting, and continuous improvement. This is done by guiding the team through Extol Management and Operating Principals and employing appropriate influence and systematic tools to continually improve processes and ensuring that custom products and manufacturing at Extol follows an appropriate management system. In addition, the Manufacturing Specialist works in a collaborative project team environment that requires flexibility in work and schedules.

Hours Required: Full-Time, 48 Hours/Week (Average) Exempt (Salary)

Regular Work Schedule: Monday – Friday with weekends as needed

Working Conditions

  • Work involves both office and on the floor requirements.
  • Work involves moving in and around machines, often in tight places such as within panel enclosures.
  • This work often involves machine debug with safety devices inhibited.
  • Work may require non-typical work hours including Saturdays and overtime to meet project deadlines. Must be able to maintain focus and concentration to ensure safety and quality of work.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Functional Responsibilities

  • Lead Assembly Team – drive Continuous Improvement and Issue identification
  • Additional direct report of MC Team Lead, and Lean Manufacturing Engineer with the requirement to drive Lean manufacturing and Vertical Integration objectives
  • Responsible for Facilities projects, maintenance activities, and associated direct reports
  • Oversee the Lean manufacturing and Vertical integration in Custom manufacturing by working alongside the Standard Product Manufacturing Specialist
    • Work with the Director of finance on Cost/Benefit Analysis
    • Evaluate and propose appropriate capital equipment to support vertical integration
  • Additional assignments included, but not limited to, Rocks and Objectives to support Extol Objectives for manufacturing.
  • Conduct performance Reviews of Assembly team and establish Objectives/goals to align with Corporate strategy
  • Live and Nurture the Extol Character Statement, management principals, and Operation Philosophies


  • Provide Manufacturing input into Specials and Tooling designs to maintain project budgets
  • Work with Material Conversions Team Leader with Expediting of required work to maintain project timelines
  • Communication of manufacturing Best Practices, Lessons learned, and insight from customer manufacturing philosophies (Including Go and See activity in customer facilities)
  • Works with PMTL, DTL, CETL on Continuous Improvement and Team performance Activities and maintain Custom Equipment Best Practices
  • Works seamlessly with other operational functional leaders to address operations challenges.
  • Assists the Manufacturing Solutions Group (MSG) and Project Managers in manufacturing equipment solution concepts and budget estimates at the quote phase.
  • Identify and incorporate appropriate metrics to support lean manufacturing efforts (Operating Philosophies QA-P-750-03)


  • Work with Functional Operational Managers to schedule available resources proactively
    • Scheduling assembly resources, based on assembly skills required, and reporting of scheduling concerns to other Functional Operational Managers
    • Assign support functions (field work) as well as increase or decrease of hours base on team capacity and project volume
  • Assembly Process Owner for Special equipment and Tooling
    • Tracks and analyzes machine assembly costs (labor and material) and timing. Utilizes analysis to recommend continuous improvement changes.
    • Development of the systems to support assembly and manufacturing- “Process to produce the intended results”
    • Maintain Assembly Issue Response Log (IRL), takes ownership of the assembly process and continuously works to improve systems, methods, and processes


  • Coach assembly team members for performance, including conducting performance reviews and personnel improvement plans if required.
  • Follows all safety requirements and communicates any safety concerns.
  • Live and Nurture the Extol Character Statement, management principals, and Operation Philosophies
  • Interfaces with Innovation and Development personnel to facilitate implementation of new technology on select customer projects.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Demonstrated understanding of production processes in plastic joining and assembly techniques.
  • Demonstrated technical writing skills to accurately document complex requirements
  • Demonstrated understanding of special machinery with the ability to problem solve moderately complex issues
  • Ability to understand and integrate knowledge of customer processes for quality
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience, building and manufacturing automation equipment.
  • Desire and ability and manage and work in a collaborative team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex projects and meet cost, quality and delivery expectations.
  • Proven ability and desire to lead and mentor a group machine builders and manufacturing team members

  • Leadership skills with ability to continually strive for excellence
  • Desire and ability to learn new technologies.
  • Training and experience in Human-Centered Design in the realm equipment manufacturing
