Performs machine assembly, wiring, plumbing and debugging of standard and special build machines. The scope includes the coordination and completion of a project from start of build to run-off. Reads and interprets customer specifications and requirements, plans and completes assembly of simple to complex machines including assembly, wiring, and plumbing of machine, debug, documentation, shipping, and service.
Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities
The activities listed below will be performed at all levels within the progression but with increasing independence and emphasis on unique situations and original thought. At a level I, work is mainly standard with supervision and some guidance provided on more complex projects. This is typically an apprentice/training level. At a level II, work involves complex tasks but these tasks typically can be addressed through unique application of standard practices. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish work. At a level III, the work includes large/complex projects. May provide direction to less experienced machine builders. Original thought and problem solving is expected with ability to foresee difficulties and take proactive actions to prevent project delays. At a level IV, work involves the coordination and completion of multiple and/or technically complex projects from start of build to run-off. May assign and monitor work for multiple assemblers and apprentices. Work requires advanced problem solving and involvement at prototype stage.
- Interprets product specifications and overall product build requirements and determines assembly process to meet project goals. Plans work, modifies details, and assembles machines. Uses schematics to perform machine wiring and plumbing.
- Identifies problems in machine assembly, and determines best solution. Coordinates with Design, Project Management, and Controls departments as needed to gain approval and document changes.
- Purchases and tracks job components and materials, as needed.
- May provide work direction to Machine Assemblers and less experienced Machine Builders. Trains and mentors less experienced machine builders in specific machine build techniques and best practices.
- Tracks and analyzes machine build costs (labor and material) and timing. Works with Project Management to resolve variances and meet customer expectations. Utilizes analysis to recommend continuous improvement changes.
- Performs machine dry cycle run (reliability testing), error proofing, debug and runoff process. Analyzes issues that occur and recommends and implements solutions.
- May assist with product installation and provide warranty and service work at customer locations. Identifies root cause of issues and fixes problems so they don’t reoccur.
- Assists in machine concepting, quoting, design reviews, quality control, and continuous improvement activities when requested. Takes ownership of the build process and continuously works to improve systems, methods and processes.
- Follows all safety requirements and communicates any safety concerns.
Machine Builder I (Apprentice)
- High school diploma, or equivalent with strong technical background. Completion of, or attendance in, Machine Builder apprenticeship program.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with ability to safely and correctly use a variety of hand power tools including: drills, saws, grinders and sanders.
- Demonstrated basic understanding of simple machine wiring and plumbing.
- Demonstrated ability to differentiate and match wire colors, and read prints and schematics.
- Demonstrated organizational skills to efficiently plan and complete work tasks.
- Demonstrated initiative to be proactive in identifying and addressing issues and opportunities.
Machine Builder II (in addition to the above requirements)
- Successful completion of a qualified apprentice program with possession of a Die Maker, Machinist, or Machine Builder card, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated competence using milling machines to make details to print.
- Demonstrated understanding and ability to complete general wiring projects independently. Basic understanding of electrical flow and safety circuits.
- Demonstrated broad knowledge of standard machine build concepts, practices, and procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to systematically solve problems. This includes accurately identifying the problem, analyzing the situation, evaluating options, and selecting/recommending the best solution.
- Demonstrated communication skills in order to demonstrate equipment and train customers in usage and maintenance.
Machine Builder III (in addition to the above requirements)
- Minimum of 5 years of machine build experience at a journeyman level, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated knowledge and ability to use industry best practices for machining and assembly.
- Demonstrated ability to plan work with consideration for quality, cost, and timing and to recommend continuous improvement to process.
- Demonstrated general knowledge of welding processes, machine debug process, hydraulics, and pneumatics.
Machine Builder IV (in addition to the above requirements)
- Minimum of 8 years of machine build experience at a journeyman level, or equivalent.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge of machine build concepts, practices, and procedures and ability to apply knowledge to new and special machine build needs.
- Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and ability to perform wiring, machining, and advanced debug of complex special machines.
- Demonstrated general knowledge of control systems, motion systems, pneumatics, hydraulics, electrical systems, prints, schematics, assembly equipment, metal forming equipment and plastics joining.
- Work involves moving in and around machines in which hazardous motions exist. Works on powered electrical panels. Must be safety conscious with respect to self and others working in area.
- Work involves moving in, under and around machines, often in tight places. Requires regular manual lifting of up to 50 lbs., with greater lifting requirements being done with an overhead crane, if needed. Positioning often requires extended reach. Must manually apply torque to fasteners.
- Work may require non-typical work hours including Saturdays and overtime in order to meet project deadlines. Must be able to maintain focus and concentration to ensure safety and quality of work.
- May perform installation, warranty and service work at customer locations. This will sometimes require overnight travel.
