Machinist II and III

Job Summary

Sets up and operates manual lathes, drills, mills, and grinders to cut and shape custom parts to specifications. Interprets design specifications and translates into plan for machining. Calculates location of cut, speed of feed, and amount of material to remove. Selects tools and materials, plans the sequence of cutting and finishing operations. Positions material in machine and performs the operations. Verifies part dimensions and tolerances. Performs basic routine maintenance of machine.

Performs other duties that may be assigned as needed.

Hours Required: Full-Time, 40 – 48 Hours/Week (Average) Non-Exempt (Hourly)

Regular Work Schedule: Monday – Friday with weekends as needed

In addition to the following the Machinist II is also responsible in supporting Extol’s leadership of the organization by adhering to all company communicated expectations.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

At a level II, work involves complex tasks but these tasks typically can be addressed through unique application of standard practices. Relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish work.

At a level III, the work includes large/complex projects. May provide direction to less experienced machinists. Original thought and problem solving is expected with ability to foresee difficulties and take proactive actions to prevent project delays.


  • Provide manufacturing feedback to design staff for best practices and budget awareness.
  • Communicate on-time status to Machine Builders and Project Managers.
  • Involved in continues improvement Kaizen activities.


  • Analyzes product design specifications and plans the layout and operation sequence to produce the part. Reviews 3D CAD blueprints of the part. Calculates where to cut or bore into the work piece (steel, aluminum, plastic, or any other material that is being shaped), how fast to feed the work piece into the machine, and how much material to remove. Selects tools and materials for the job. Plans the sequence of cutting and finishing operations. Marks the work piece to show where cuts should be made.
  • Perform the necessary machining operations. Positions the work piece on the machine tool, (drill press, lathe, milling machine, or other type of machine), sets the controls, and makes the cuts. Monitors the feed-rate and speed of the machine and ensures the work piece is properly lubricated and cooled.
  • Monitors machining process to detect problems such as a dull cutting tool, or excessive vibration. Removes and replaces dull tools. Adjusts cutting speeds to compensate for vibrations.
  • Verifies dimensions of work-piece, using calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.
  • Stages materials to be machined and transports finished product to next stage in process or to inventory. Records job completion for tracking against build schedule.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance to include basic cleaning of machine and filling of fluid containers.
  • Applies knowledge of the properties of metal and basic machining techniques to maximize machining efficiency and accuracy.
  • Follows all safety requirements and communicates any safety concerns. Maintains a neat work area.


  • May train and provide work direction to less experienced Machinists.

Required Skills & Experience

  • High school diploma, or equivalent with strong technical background including shop math and blueprint reading, or equivalent. Completion of, or attendance in, Machinist apprenticeship program.
  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude with ability to safely and correctly use a variety of hand power tools including: drills, saws, grinders and sanders.
  • Demonstrated ability to use standard measuring equipment such as micrometers and calipers.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills to efficiently plan and complete work tasks.
  • Demonstrated initiative to be proactive in identifying and addressing issues and opportunities.
  • Successful completion of a qualified apprentice program with possession of a Machinist card, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated competence using lathes, drills, grinders, and milling machines to make moderately complex details to print.
  • Demonstrated ability to systematically solve problems. This includes accurately identifying the problem, analyzing the situation, evaluating options, and selecting/recommending the best solution.

At a levell III, also:

  • Minimum of 5 years of machining experience at a journeyman level, or equivalent.
  • Demonstrated in-depth understanding of machining techniques with the ability to develop original solutions to complex production issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully manage complex projects and meet cost, quality and delivery expectations.

Preferred Skills & Experience – level II

  • Minimum 3 years’ experience with operating a series 1 knee mill (Bridgeport) and Manual lathe.
  • Proficient at surface grinding.
  • Background in inspection.
  • Familiarity with TIG welding.
  • Self-motivated.
  • SolidWorks background and capability of providing print mark-ups for design feedback.

Preferred Skills & Experience – level III

  • Minimum 6 years’ experience with operating a series 1 knee mill (Bridgeport) and Manual lathe.
  • Skilled and Proficient at surface grinding.
  • Background in inspection and quality.
  • Proficient at TIG welding.
  • Strong project management skills and self-motivated.
  • High emotional intelligence with experience in coaching less experienced talent to grow.
  • Understand of project budgets and proven capability to execute within the project budget expectations.
  • SolidWorks background and capability of providing print mark-ups for design feedback.


  • General manufacturing environment, daily exposure to machinery and potential non- hazardous chemicals and lubricants.
  • Work involves operating machines in which hazardous motions exist. Requires regular manual lifting of up to 50 lbs., with greater lifting requirements being done with an overhead crane, if needed. Positioning often requires extended reach. Must manually apply torque to fasteners.
  • Work may require non-typical work hours including Saturdays and overtime in order to meet project deadlines. Must be able to maintain focus and concentration to ensure safety and quality of work.
